Jiufen is a former gold mining village built into a mountainside about 30 km northeast of Taipei. It’s now a popular tourist spot filled with delectable food stalls, peaceful teahouses overlooking the sea, and stray cats sunning on rooftops and food bins.
You can eat yuyuan and diguayuan (also known as tangyuan) there - bowls of chewy, pastel taro and sweet potato balls in a sweet and clear purple-gray soup. Eating will not be necessary for several months after having this starchriffic refreshment.
