Jiufen is a former gold mining village built into a mountainside about 30 km northeast of Taipei. It’s now a popular tourist spot filled with delectable food stalls, peaceful teahouses overlooking the sea, and stray cats sunning on rooftops and food bins.
You can have yu yuan and di gua yuan there - bowls of chewy taro and sweet potato balls in a sweet and clear purple-gray soup (sounds weird but is delicious!). Eating will not be necessary for several months after having this starchy refreshment.
